Mljet National Park sits on the western side of Mljet Island in Croatia’s Adriatic Sea, a place where saltwater lakes meet ancient forest pathways. The park was established in 1960 and stretches across nearly one-third of the island, with Veliko Jezero (Great Lake) and Malo Jezero (Small Lake) as their most striking features. These two saltwater lakes are connected by a narrow channel to the open sea, creating calm blue waters that draw visitors for swims, casual kayak outings, or peaceful cycles around the shaded paths that ring them.

At the center of Veliko Jezero lies the tiny islet of St. Mary, home to a Benedictine monastery and church built in the 12th century. Here, guests can step back into history as they explore the monastic spaces or enjoy a meal at a restaurant near the ancient stone walls. Regular small boats, included with park entry, ferry visitors across the lake so they can take in the views from this quiet spot surrounded by water.
